The local teams collectively claimed a maximum of 20 log points last weekend to boost their playoff aspirations, and with this being another round of home games for them, they’ll look to make the most of it again.
The action will get underway in Durban, where the Sharks collide with Cardiff on Friday night. The rest of the South African sides will run out on Saturday, beginning with the Bulls, who battle Munster at Loftus Versfeld.
The Lions will look to feast on the Dragons at Ellis Park, while the Stormers seek to consolidate their place in the top two against Edinburgh in Cape Town.
Sharks v Cardiff
Friday, 27 March – 19:00
Sleepless nights for JP Pietersen led to the most meaningful and commanding victory of the season for the Sharks against Munster last weekend.
Dominant in every facet of the game, the Durbanites pummelled their visitors and pitched a shutout for a 45-0 victory that they dedicated to Ethan Hooker’s father, who recently passed away.
Inspired and accurate, it was their most clinical and complete performance of the campaign, one that highlighted why fans have been so frustrated as the Sharks are clearly capable of big things when they click.
As it stands, they’re still in 11th place, six points behind the eighth-placed Bulls, and essentially find themselves in knockout central. Backing up good performances has been an issue for them, but they did it in the back-to-back triumphs over the Stormers and should do so on Friday night, given the balance they struck and boost in Springbok stars they’re set to receive.
While they were ultimately crushed 40-7 by the Bulls last weekend, fifth-placed Cardiff are tricky customers with their impressive breakdown work and varied kicking game, but the Sharks shouldn’t have too much difficulty taking them down.
Prediction: Sharks by 22.
Suggested Bet: Sharks -20 at 1.90.
Leinster v Scarlets
Friday, 27 March – 21:45
The 38-17 defeat in Glasgow last weekend made it back-to-back losses for Leinster and left them fourth with a record of 8-5.
With their Irish stars coming back and business picking up in both the URC and Investec Champions Cup, expect the ‘real’ Leinster to emerge.
The Scarlets snapped a three-match winless streak with a 36-17 triumph over Zebre last weekend. In lowly 14th place, they don’t realistically stand a chance of shocking the defending champions or reaching the playoffs.
Prediction: Leinster by 24.
Suggested Bet: Leinster -22 at 1.90.
Glasgow Warriors v Benetton
Friday, 27 March – 21:45
Leinster are still the odds-on favourites to win the title for a second season in a row (currently at 2.00), but the Warriors are becoming an increasingly juicier prospect to reign supreme (currently at 4.50).
They are full value for their place at the top of the table and such a well-oiled machine, as they showed by putting the defending champions to the sword last weekend.
Benetton’s 31-19 triumph over the Ospreys last weekend was their first URC win this year. It was a massive morale-booster for the 12th-placed Italians, but it’ll be short-lived, with the Warriors set to march on.
Prediction: Glasgow Warriors by 18.
Suggested Bet: Glasgow Warriors -17 at 1.90.
Bulls v Munster
Saturday, 28 March – 14:00
Back in business after rediscovering their clinical edge and romping to a 33-point win over Cardiff last weekend, the Bulls have a top-four finish in their sights but know they need to take things step by step.
Therefore, they won’t take Munster lightly. The Irish outfit are coming off one of their worst showings in URC history, enduring an 80-minute nightmare in Durban during which they bled 45 points and scored none.
However, their pedigree is proven, and as a proud side, they’ll be out to redeem themselves at Loftus. It might be a cauldron, but Munster – who are two spots above the Herd in sixth place – have fond memories there, having beaten the Bulls 27-22 on their last trip to Pretoria in 2024.
Their work at the breakdown and under the high ball still needs improvement, and their second-half drop-offs need to be addressed, but Johan Ackermann’s men should bank another five log points with their dominant set piece and lethal counter-attacking.
Prediction: Bulls by 12.
Suggested Bet: Munster +13 at 1.90.
Connacht v Ospreys
Saturday, 28 March – 16:15
In what was a big favour for the South African teams aside from the Sharks, Connacht claimed a surprise 26-19 away win over third-placed Ulster last weekend.
They’ve now quietly won four on the bounce to move up to ninth place and host the 10th-placed Ospreys. With respect, if the Welsh region couldn’t beat Zebre (23-19) or Benetton (31-19) in their last two away games, they’re not going to upset an in-form Connacht in Galway.
Prediction: Connacht by 16.
Suggested Bet: Connacht -9 at 1.90.
Lions v Dragons
Saturday, 28 March – 16:30
The Lions were at their lethal best against Edinburgh last weekend, decimating the visitors 54-17 in a dazzling display. It was pure entertainment from the Pride, who reminded all that they’re the counter-attacking kings of the league by running in a couple of Try of the Season contenders.
More important than the style points was the fact that Ivan van Rooyen’s side achieved what they’d set out to do, backing up the preceding wins over the Sharks and Stormers. They’ve now won three in a row, and by all indications, they should continue that streak and shoot up two places to fifth.
While the Stormers were wasteful, the Dragons deserve credit for the fight they showed in their eight-point loss in Cape Town last weekend. They may be second from bottom, but they earned respect with their gutsy performance. Unfortunately for them, it should result in a double blow as any chance of the Lions underestimating them is now out of the window.
The Dragons will be up for the fight, but the toll of the Cape Town clash, the quick turnaround and the altitude factor should see the Lions prevail with room to spare.
Prediction: Lions by 17.
Suggested Bet: Dragons +20 at 1.90.
Stormers v Edinburgh
Saturday, 28 March – 19:00
Ironically, South Africa’s best-placed side, who’d been tipped to score the biggest win of the local teams last weekend, turned out to be the most underwhelming as the Stormers stuttered to a 29-21 win over the 15th-placed Dragons.
Fourteen handling errors summed up the Capetonians’ frustrating hit-out, but as captain Ruhan Nel put it, an ugly win is better than a beautiful loss any day of the week, especially if that win moved you clear of Ulster and Leinster in second place.
After being ripped to shreds at Ellis Park, Edinburgh are in for another long 80 minutes in the Mother City, where they’ve never troubled the hosts. Their 37-point drubbing by the Lions was their fourth loss in five games, and even a few reinforcements won’t change their fortunes on Saturday.
Prediction: Stormers by 19.
Suggested Bet: Edinburgh +20 at 1.90.
Zebre v Ulster
Sunday, 22 March – 15:00
Saturday, 28 March – 21:45
Ulster will be seething after dropping the ball at home against Connacht last weekend.
The surprise seven-point loss was a major missed opportunity for the third-placed boys from Belfast, and they’ll be doubly fired up to ensure they pick up maximum log points in Parma.
Rooted to the bottom of the log, Zebre’s 19-point reverse at the Scarlets last weekend was their fourth in succession, and the die-hard fans who’ll be heading out to support them on Saturday are in for more disappointment.
Prediction: Ulster by 15.
Suggested Bet: Ulster -11 at 1.90.
