LIV Golf South Africa talking points

LIV Golf has faced skepticism since its formation as a breakaway circuit in the golfing world, with many viewing it as a lucrative endeavor. Nonetheless, this perception is likely to shift this year, as it exhibits signs of rivaling the PGA Tour and DP World Tour in terms of crowd attendance.

The Adelaide edition of LIV in Australia earlier this year was hailed as a huge success by the organizers, who are dedicated to taking the tournament to new heights. However, the first edition on African soil, which concluded at Steyn City in Johannesburg, set an even higher standard. The competition among players was outstanding, and the attendance figures surpassed expectations. Let’s delve into the key highlights from LIV Golf South Africa.

Record attendance

The four-day tournament generated significant buzz, drawing over 100,000 spectators who came to enjoy the golf. This marks the largest attendance ever recorded for a golf event in the country, exceeding the 76,000 attendees at the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge. Consequently, the LIV owners have decided to give South Africa another opportunity to host the event next year. The news was shared on the last day of the event, with South Africans being afforded another chance to watch top golfers in action.

Dechambeau moves closer to all-time list

Bryson Dechambeau showcased exceptional golfing prowess to claim victory at the LIV Golf South Africa tournament. In doing so, he became the second golfer, after Joaquin Niemann, to achieve back-to-back title wins. This triumph follows his victory at the Singapore edition last week. The 32-year-old American has now secured five LIV titles, matching Brooks Koepka’s record. He currently ranks second in terms of titles won, behind Niemann, who leads with seven titles. The former US Open winner is in outstanding form and may soon equal the record before the season concludes. Although it’s a challenging task, his consistency makes it achievable.

Grace comeback

One of the most impressive performers at the LIV Golf South Africa event, which took place over four days, was Brendan Grace. Throughout the competition, the 37-year-old South African golfer was on fire, barely missing out on the title on home soil and finishing tied for third overall. This marked Grace’s highest finish on LIV Golf since his outstanding performance at the 2023 LIV Golf Washington DC. The fact that a golfer of his age and experience could deliver such a strong performance was a source of inspiration for local fans, who hoped that the title would remain in South Africa. Grace will likely be motivated to leverage this momentum.
