High Stakes: Barrios v Garcia Preview and Prediction

This ain’t a high-stakes poker game; the risks are much greater and the rewards that much sweeter as boxing superstar Ryan Garcia returns to challenge Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night (Sunday morning SA time), writes Quintin van Jaarsveld.

Mario Barrios (2.75) v Ryan Garcia (1.50) (WBC Welterweight Championship)

6 AM Sunday SA time

This fight has it all.

It’s a clash between two highly skilled boxers with proven knockout power who are fighting for more than the WBC welterweight championship of the world.

The champion is seeking validation, while the challenger is out for redemption. Add the fact that Garcia’s former trainer, Joe Goossen, is in Barrios’ corner for this fight, and we have one of the juiciest showdowns of the year.

As a highly gifted and entertaining boxer, as well as a social media sensation with model-like looks, Garcia is a superstar who transcends the sweet science. He’s charismatic, controversial and often times, erratic. However, the guy can fight, and when he’s on, he looks unbeatable.

As an enigmatic megastar, he’s the main character of every fight. The spotlight, generally, is on him, rather than his opponent. Barrios may be the champion and his name might be on the A-side of the marquee, but it’s Garcia who’s the draw and who’ll have all the eyes on him.

“King Ry” has had a highly publicised fall from grace in recent years. His epic majority decision win over Devin Haney in 2024 was overturned to a no-contest when he tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine the day before the fight in a VADA drug test.

His comeback fight following his ban then didn’t go as planned, as he was knocked down and dropped a unanimous decision to Rolly Romero last May. While it was just the second loss of his career, with his record still remarkable at 24-2 with 20 knockouts, some do wonder if he’s lost his magic.

For the 27-year-old, this is an opportunity to fulfil his immense potential and claim his first major world title, a shot at redemption, and a chance to set himself up for mega-money fights with Haney or Conor Benn in the future.

The last few years haven’t been plain sailing for Barrios, whose record stands at an impressive 29-2-2 with 18 knockouts, either.

The highlight came when he beat Fabian Maidana by unanimous decision in 2023 to win the interim WBC welterweight title. He was elevated to full world champion in May 2024 after Terence Crawford moved up to junior middleweight.

Since being recognised as WBC champion, “El Azteca” has gone 0-0-2. He was dropped and fought to a split draw with Abel Ramos in November 2024 on the undercard of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson card and escaped with a controversial majority draw against the legendary Manny Pacquiao last July.

With many believing he was beaten by the then-46-year-old “Pac Man” and with no ‘true’ title defences, Barrios’ reign is one of the weakest in history, but he can change all that with a validating victory this weekend.

To do so, the 30-year-old has cunningly roped in Goossen, Garcia’s former trainer. Nobody knows Garcia better than the Hall of Famer, so if anyone can prepare Barrios to beat him, it’s Goossen.

By hiring Goossen, Barrios has landed the first punch, one Garcia admits stung. At the opening press conference in Los Angeles, Garcia addressed his former mentor, saying, “How could you, Joe? That’s messed up. I can’t believe you’re doing this to me. That’s insane. You broke my heart.”

It was clear at that event that heartbreak had morphed into hate, as he called Goossen a traitor and gave him a shirt that said, “I’m a traitor.” He added that the newfound hate is serving as added motivation.

It’s one thing to know what to expect, but it’s another thing altogether to stop or circumvent it. Garcia is renowned for his extraordinary speed, both in terms of his footwork and hand speed.

It’s something Barrios has never experienced before, and it’ll be interesting to see if he finds legitimate ways to overcome it or if he pulls out some shady moves to try to suffocate his faster foe.

Skill-wise, Garcia is on another level and he and his father, Henry, his current trainer, obviously worked on new angles, entry points and ways for him to land what is the best left hook in boxing.

Highly motivated and fully focused, this weekend will see “King Ry” seize the throne.

Prediction: Garcia by knockout.

Best Bet: Garcia by KO/TKO/DQ at 2.30.

Alternative Bet: Garcia at 1.50.
