ATP Finals Preview
The men’s tennis season has reached its climax, with the top eight players set to contest the ATP Finals. The tournament has consistently provided a captivating setting.
This year’s event will take place from 9-16 November in Turin, Italy, with world no 1 Jannik Sinner leading a highly talented field. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion, is still uncertain about participating due to his involvement in the Athens Open this weekend. Djokovic decided to skip the Paris Masters last month to honor his invitation to Greece. Last year, he also missed the Finals, where Sinner emerged victorious after defeating Taylor Fritz in the final. Let’s explore the preview.
Jannik Sinner
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is poised to enter the ATP Finals tournament as the clear favorite to win the title. The Italian will be eager to defend the title he secured last year, defeating Taylor Fritz in a convincing 6-4, 6-4 straight-set victory in the final in front of a home crowd in Turin, Italy. Since losing the US Open final to Carlos Alcaraz, the 24-year-old has been in outstanding form, winning three out of four tournaments he has participated in. He commenced his Asia tour by claiming the China Open last month, before suffering a disappointing exit from the Shanghai Masters round of 32. Sinner then regrouped to claim the Vienna Open and Paris Masters titles. Having dropped only a single set in his last 10 matches, he is exhibiting red-hot form. The home advantage is likely to provide an additional boost to propel him to victory.
Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz’s remarkable performance at the ATP Finals last year saw him reach the final, where he ultimately fell short against Jannik Sinner, losing 6-4, 6-4. This year, the 28-year-old American enters the tournament with the goal of defying expectations and making history. A victory would make him the first American to win the trophy since Pete Sampras’s triumph 26 years ago. To achieve this historic feat, he must deliver exceptional performances against the top players competing in Italy. Although his recent results have been inconsistent, his standout performance at the Japan Open, where he reached the final, demonstrates his potential. However, he has struggled in recent tournaments, exiting in the round of 32 in both Shanghai and Paris Masters, and falling in the round of 16 at the Swiss Indoor tournament. As one of the talented players on tour, he has the ability to deliver when it matters.
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz is set to compete in Italy, with the intention of making a significant impact on the tournament. This will be his third appearance in the tournament, with his best result to date being a semi-final finish in 2023. The 22-year-old Spaniard recently achieved a notable milestone by securing his maiden US Open title in September, defeating his rival Jannik Sinner in the process, which propelled him to the number one spot in the world. He then went on to win the Japan Open trophy. However, he has since opted to skip other tournaments due to an ankle injury. In the Paris Masters, he was unexpectedly eliminated in the round of 32 by Casper Ruud, which had a negative impact on his rankings, causing him to drop to second place. To end the year as the world’s top player, he must secure a victory over Sinner. This season, he has beaten Sinner four out of five times they have faced each other. It remains to be seen whether he can emerge victorious in Italy.
Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev is set to make his seventh overall and third consecutive appearance at the ATP Finals. The German star has previously emerged victorious in the 2018 and 2021 editions of the tournament. Despite failing to secure a title this year, the 28-year-old has remained consistent and maintained a top-six ranking globally. Zverev will enter the tournament on the back of a strong performance at the Paris Masters, where he lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Jannik Sinner. This was his second consecutive loss to Sinner within a fortnight, following his defeat in the Vienna Open final last month.
Prize Money
The season finale, held from 9-16 November at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, will offer a record-breaking $15.5 million in total prize money. The winner of the 2025 ATP Finals will receive a record $5,071,000, the highest payout in the event’s history.
