Winners & Losers: PSL & CAF Weekend

Looking back statistically at the South African club football weekend.

Published on

The return of club football triggered the return of new talking points and narratives domestically and continentally. Locally, there were good wins for AmaZulu and TS Galaxy, while Siwelele and Golden Arrows stumbled. Simultaneously, PSL teams on the continent experienced a mixed bag – a comfortable win for Sundowns, a late win for Stellenbosch and a similarly late defeat for Chiefs. There were some bright individual performances across the board that need to be highlighted. Winners & Losers cuts through the noise to statistically review the weekend action.

WINNERS

Arthur Zwane

AmaZulu’s home form has been solid all season, but they lost to Polokwane City at home just before the international break, and one wondered if that bubble had burst. There was no need to worry – as the trend continued after the break.

10 – AmaZulu have won 10 home league games in 2025, their best ever year at home in the league.

TS Galaxy

A win that propelled them up into the top half of the table. When TS Glaaxy score first at home, the game is essentially over. In the 38 occasions, they have opened the scoring in a home league game, they have lost just once.

4 – 4 Galaxy have won 4 straight home games, their best home winning run under Beganovic.

Puso Dithejane

A goal and an assist in this game highlighted his importance in this game, but there are many more numbers that highlight his importance all season. The goal was long overdue (he hasn’t scored in the competition since August), but he has been creatively outstanding nonetheless.

7 – No player has created as many big chances as Puso Dithejane this season (7).

Stellenbosch in CAF

Domestically their season has been a worry – Stellies are technically in the relegation zone. Continentally, they tend to show a different maturity – symbolised by the 94th minute winner when all hope looked lost.

1 – Stellies have only ever lost just one home game in CAF competitions (P9 W6 D2 L1).

Sundowns in CAF

Sundowns were playing their 100th home game in CAF competitions as a PSL club, and got their 71st win. Alongside 25 wins, they have lost just 4 times at home in 30 years – an astonishing record.

100 – Sundowns have scored 100 goals in 2025, the first team to reach the mark this year.

LOSERS

Kaizer Chiefs struggles in Egypt

A draw would have been a solid result for Chiefs to open their CAF campaign, but they contrived to gift the opponents – first a penalty, then a late defensive blunder to lose 2-1.

0 – Chiefs have never won a CAF game played away in Egypt (P4 W0 D1 L3).

Sekhukhune’s winless run

That’s six winless games for Eric Tinkler’s side. More worrying is their newfound tendency to drop points.

2022 – This is the first time since 2022 Sekhukhune have failed to win consecutive games despite going 1-0 up in each match.

Golden Arrows away form

For those counting, Arrows have won just one of their 12 away games under Manqoba Mngqithi, drawing four and losing the other seven.
