Veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet hangs up his gloves!

Darren Keet has announced he will retire at the end of the season, bowing out on a high after helping Durban City secure a Nedbank Cup final victory over TS Galaxy. The experienced goalkeeper, who has been in top form this season, says the decision comes down to timing, family, and the desire to begin a new chapter in coaching.

The 36-year-old shot-stopper, who has been a key figure for Durban City this season, Darren Keet, has confirmed that he will retire once the current season wraps up. His announcement came just moments after helping his team secure a 2 – 1 victory in the Nedbank Cup final against TS Galaxy, a fitting end to a long and dedicated career.

For Keet, the timing feels right. Ending on a high, with a winner’s medal in hand, is something every player dreams of. Despite still performing at a top level, with 12 clean sheets in 26 league matches this season, he believes it’s time to close this chapter.

Off the pitch, life has also played a role in his decision. With his family based in Cape Town while he’s been in Durban, the distance has been tough. Now, he’s ready to prioritise being closer to home while also starting a new journey from the sidelines. Coaching is firmly on his radar, and while he’s keeping details under wraps for now, it’s clear he’s excited about what’s next.

Looking back, Keet reflects on more than just the silverware. While trophies stand out, it’s the grind, the tough weeks, the pressure, the constant push to improve that sticks with him the most. Those are the moments that shaped him.

His journey hasn’t been a straight line. From humble beginnings in Cape Town’s local football scene, he worked his way up through various clubs before making a name for himself at Bidvest Wits. A move to Belgium followed, adding international experience to his career, before eventually returning home to continue playing at a high level.

With over 400 professional appearances and multiple titles to his name, Keet leaves the game with plenty to be proud of, and a new chapter just beginning.

However, with the league still underway, you can still place your bet on Bet.co.za today.
