Stats Leaderboard: 10 stats from the PSL season

Who tops the stats in the PSL season so far – Part 1 (Players)

Published on

We are into the final international break of 2025, and the third of the season. As usual, the break gives us a chance to breathe and take stock of what the season has delivered. With nearly 100 matches played in the campaign, now is a perfect time to check in the leaderboards when it comes to some of the stats. We’ve selected 10 stats to help review the campaign so far, with five player stats (Part 1) followed by five team stats (Part 2) to consider. Enjoy.

Most shots taken by a player

Kaizer Chiefs’ Makabi Lilepo has not had much luck in front of goal (one goal all season), but it does not mean he has not been busy. He has taken the most shots in the division, and he is at least 20 shots ahead of the next best man.

Top three players for shots taken this season (goals in brackets):

  • 45 – Makabi Lilepo (Kaizer Chiefs, 1)
  • 25 – Bokang  Mokwena (Durban City, 1)
  • 23 – Tashreeq Matthews (Sundowns, 4)

Best minutes per goal ratio

His teammate, Flavio Silva has four goals in the league, so does not feature among the top goalscorers. However his goals have come in a limited amount of on-field time (139 minutes to be exact) – that’s the equivalent of a game and a half. This makes him one of the most efficient players in front of goal.

Top 3 players with the best minutes-per-goal ratio:

  • 35 minutes per goal: Flavio Silva (Kaizer Chiefs)
  • 50 minutes per goal: Thokozani Khumalo (Golden Arrows)
  • 57 minutes per goal: Yamela Mbuthuma (Orlando Pirates)

Most chances created by a player

Siyanda Ndlovu (ex-Siyanda Mthanthi) has been one of the best players in the league this season, and the recent Player of the Month award is testament to that. He became the first ever Arrows player to win the award since we have this data available (2014/15+), and has been a key player in the Arrows attack.

Top three players for chances created this season:

  • 26 – Siyanda Ndlovu (Golden Arrows)
  • 19 – Keletso Makgalwa (Sekhukhune)
  • 18 – Puleng Tlolane (Polokwane City) & Mdu Shabalala (Kaizer Chiefs)

Most big chances created

While creating chances is one thing, we can also make a distinction with big chances created. Big chances are defined as passes made by a player putting the shooter in a situation where they are reasonably expected to score, usually in a one on one scenario or from very close range when the ball has a clear path to goal and there is low to moderate pressure on them.

Top three players for big chances created:

  • 6 – Puso Dithejane (TS Galaxy)
  • 5 – Kgomotso Mosadi (Magesi), Hendrick Ekstein (AmaZulu), Bheki Mabuza (Marumo Gallants), Deon Hotto (Orlando Pirates), Keletso Makgalwa (Sekhukhune)

Most saves by a goalkeeper

A mention should be made of goalkeepers too. The number of saves does not necessarily correlate with being the best goalkeeper – some keepers don’t make as many saves because they do not face as many shots. So, we’ve added save percentage in brackets for more context.

Top 3 goalkeepers for saves made in the league this season:

  • 39 – Ira Tape (TS Galaxy, 76% save percentage)
  • 39 – Washington Arubi (Marumo Gallants, 72%)
  • 31 – Sage Stephens (Stellenbosch, 67%)
