Betting Notebook: PSL Matchday 10

A betting guide for the PSL weekend

Published on

Following a mammoth international week in which the national team qualified for their first World Cup in 24 years, domestic football returns this weekend. The PSL has only four games on the schedule, with the rest of the country’s representatives involved in continental football. Sundowns, Orlando Pirates (Champions League), but Stellenbosch and Kaizer Chiefs (Confederations Cup) will be in CAF competitions. Domestically, there are four fixtures scattered across the weekend, with a KZN derby being the highlight. Our Betting Notebook brings statistical context as a preview to the weekend games.

AmaZulu (9th) v Durban City 4th)

Newly promoted Durban City have surprised many so far this season, and currently sit fourth on the league table. To be fair, they may be a new side, but they have a tried and tested coach at the helm in Gavin Hunt. The teams had contrasting fortunes in the Cup prior to the international break, with City thumping Polokwane 4-1 to take their place in the next round. Meanwhile, AmaZulu lost 3-2 to Magesi to exit yet another Cup early on. There’s no head-to-head to consider between the two clubs (City are a rather new establishment). However, the coaches have some familiarity having met twice before, and each got one win. There’s a bit more history with Gavin Hunt and AmaZulu, though.

1 – Hunt has won just one of his last eight games against AmaZulu (P8 W1 D4 L3) since February 2021.

Magesi (15th) v TS Galaxy (7th)

Both teams threw in Cup winning performances just before the international break, albeit in different styles. Magesi were involved in a 5-goal thriller against AmaZulu, cruising to a 2-0 lead within a half hour before winning it late after Usuthu had equalised. Galaxy’s progress had less goals, but had its own drama – a 110th minute goal ensuring they progressed. Yet, in the league, Galaxy are the entertainers – banging 13 goals in eight matches (only Sundowns have more goals this season). We could see goals in this one, so any punt over 1.5 goals could be fruitful. Historically, Magesi ahve done well in this relatively new fixture, winning twice last season and drawing once. Plus, their home form has been stellar all year.

1 – Magesi have lost just one of their last 12 home games (P12 W7 D4 L1 since February this year).

Marumo Gallants (11th) v Chippa (16th)

Bottom of the table Chippa United take a long trip from the Eastern Cape inland, looking to grab a result that will lift them off the bottom of the table. No team has conceded more goals in the division than the Chili Boys, who have let in 14 already in 9 games. Even their Expected Goals against numbers are the worst in the league, just below 15. Marumo Gallants, meanwhile, have been draw specialists this season, leading that tally with 4. Indeed, four of their last five league matches have ended in a 1-1 draw. Last season both matches between these sides did not see a winner – will the pattern of draws continue yet again. It’s hard to see Chippa get three points, especially away from home

11 – Chippa have not won any of their last 11 games (D4 L7 all comps), a run stretching back to March 2025.

You can bet on a draw or Gallants win

You can bet on Marumi to score Over 1.5 goals
