Big Match Preview: 2026 Nedbank Cup Final
A preview of the final major Cup final of the domestic season
The 2026 Nedbank Cup final is the major highlight of the domestic sporting weekend, with TS Galaxy and Durban City battling it out for the prize. The stakes are equally high for both teams, even if they come into this one with different histories in the tournament. For TS Galaxy, they are looking for their second Nedbank Cup crown, after the 2019 title they won at the expense of Kaizer Chiefs. As for Durban City, they will be aiming for their first ever FA Cup title. This is a statistical review of the weekend’s Cup final.
29 – This is the 29th FA Cup final of the PSL era, covering Bob Save, ABSA and Nedbank Cups.
TS Galaxy
History
For the second time in their history, TS Galaxy will be competing in this final. Seven years ago, they became the first team in PSL history to win the competition as a non top-flight club. It is a proud record that still stands today. Now a fully established top-flight team, the underdog tag will not apply this weekend. If anything, their newly promoted opponents could consider themselves the outsiders.
Road to the final, and form
While they have not gone beyond the quarter final since that famous win, they still maintain a strong record in the competition. Only Sundowns (70%) have a better win ratio in Nedbank Cup games than TS Galaxy (68%). Their journey in this edition has been impressive, notably knocking Sundowns out. However, their form has dipped in the last few months. Since the end of February, they have played 10 games in all competitions, and won just one (D3 L6).
Key man
This is the context within which interim coach Bernard Parker will be leading the Rockets. Following the departure of Adnan Beganovic, the former Bafana player has stepped in and will be in the dugout of a major final just seven days into the job. However, he has been assistant coach for a while, so there is a bit of continuity there. Should he win his first final, Parker would become an immediate legend at the club.
Durban City
Road to the final
A season ago, Magesi became the first newly promoted side in PSL history to win a major domestic trophy in the season immediately after promotion. Durban City have the opportunity to become the second. Their journey to the final has been characterised by tight games. City progressed via penalties in their first three rounds, and needed an own-goal to go past Casric Stars in the semis.
Form
Yet, their form has nosedived since that semi-final win. They have failed to win any of the four league games they played since qualifying for the showpiece event. One point from 12 is not the kind of form you want heading into a final. This included a 5-2 beating at the hands of the aforementioned Magesi, which suggests there is a leak in the defence that can be exploited.
Key men
Having said that, Durban City’s defence is likely to be a strength that they rely on. In the league, they are one of five teams to have kept more than 10 clean sheets, a record they share with clubs like Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. The likes of Darren Keet and Haashim Domingo have brought much needed experience to City’s campaign. Keet was a league and Cup winner with Wits 10 seasons ago. But Domingo is a more recent winner, including this same competition in 2022.
Head-to-head
There is not much to go with in the head-too-head stakes, although the three meetings between the sides have an interesting trend. Last season, City knocked Galaxy out of the Nedbank Cup in the Round of 16. This season, City have completed a league double over TS Galaxy, beating them 2-0 in both fixtures. If that is anything to go by, City will be the more confident side here, and for that reason, we are backing them to take this one.
