The stage is set for an epic URC Grand Final as Leinster and the Bulls renew their rivalry at Croke Park. Can Leinster secure back-to-back titles, or will the Bulls finally claim their first URC crown?

The United Rugby Championship title is on the line as Leinster Rugby takes on the Vodacom Bulls on Friday, 19 June. It’s a high-stakes rematch of last season’s final. Leinster is chasing back-to-back titles while the Bulls are trying to finally leave their mark.

Leinster will be looking to redeem their title after their 2024/25 season win. They will be going into this match with confidence after their 20-11 semi-final win over the DHL Stormers. So, with home advantage on their side, they will be backing themselves to deliver another championship performance.

The Bulls will be coming into this match with confidence after their 22-21 defeat over the Glasgow Warriors. This close semi-final match showed the way the Bulls are able to make an extraordinary comeback in the second half of a game. They will be determined to avenge last year’s defeat and finally lift their first URC trophy.

Why This Match Matters So Much

This final is more than just a title decided for the Bulls. It’s a rematch and a way for them to prove themselves to Leinster after their 32-7 defeat last season. This will be their fourth final in a row. So, this is their chance for redemption and an opportunity to break their Grand Final curse.

For Leinster, a win would etch them into the book of greats in the URC. A back-to-back win against the Bulls would reinforce their consistency, strength, and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments.

Tactical Overview

Expect Leinster to control territory through fast ruck speed and structured play. They’re known for their relentless pressure, territorial control, and tempo. When they get into the rhythm, they’re able to stretch defenses and create scoring chances from almost anywhere on the field.

This makes them extremely hard to stop. So, if they are able to maintain pressure and control possession, they have a real chance of holding the trophy.

The Bulls will counter with physical dominance. Their set-piece strength and forward power have been central to their success this season, especially at scrum time and around the breakdown. They will aim to slow down the game and make it more physical.

The Leinster coach, Leo Cullen, said that the Bulls pose a major threat ahead of the URC final. He reflected on the Bulls saying: “They’re a hugely physical team, and we need to be ready for that challenge.”

Cullen went on to say: “The Bulls, listen, they’re different the way they defend but they’re a team with a ton of Springbok experience. World Cup winners littered throughout their group.

“If you look at some of the players they’ve added as well. The likes of Handré Pollard in particular. He’s a World Cup winner and what he brings to a team.

“They’re a serious outfit.”

Ultimately, the tactical battle will come down to whether the Bulls can disrupt Leinster’s tempo.

Players to Watch

Josh van der Flier (Leinster)

Making a monumental try in last year’s final, Josh van der Flier will be returning this year with the hopes of making another. This flanker will be making his 175th cap for Leinster. His experience, work rate, and leadership make him a player to watch.

Handre Pollard (Bulls)

As an experienced flyhalf having won two back-to-back Rugby World Cups, Handre Pollard is a player to watch. His calmness under pressure, tactical kicking ability, and the way he controls the tempo of the game makes him one of the most dangerous players on the field. With the Bulls going against Leinster, they will need Pollard’s experience to secure their first-ever URC title.

Prediction

After the Bulls win against Leinster in October 2025, this final is expected to be far closer than last season’s match. The Bulls have improved in all areas. This is evident by their win in their last six out of six games.

But Leinster has home advantage, squad depth, and attacking structure on their side. This gives them the edge in high-pressure situations such as the Grand Final. So, if they control possession early, they’re extremely hard to stop.

Prediction: Leinster to win
