Formula 1: Antonelli Heads to Barcelona as the Driver to Beat
Formula 1 heads straight to Barcelona after Monaco, with Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli continuing to put daylight between himself and the rest of the field.
The young Italian secured his fifth consecutive victory last weekend, extending his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship to 66 points.
Previous Race
Kimi Antonelli’s superb campaign continued at the Monaco Grand Prix, where the Mercedes youngster claimed another impressive victory.
In a chaotic race filled with incidents and penalties, Antonelli kept his composure while several experienced rivals faltered. His measured drive secured yet another win and further strengthened his grip on the championship.
Lewis Hamilton was among those handed a pit-lane speeding penalty, but the Ferrari driver recovered brilliantly. Benefitting from a late Safety Car, Hamilton fought back to finish second and, in doing so, matched Ayrton Senna’s Monaco podium record.
Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar completed the podium, salvaging a positive result for the team after Max Verstappen became the first of seven retirements during the race.
Oscar Piastri crossed the line in fourth, narrowly ahead of RB’s Liam Lawson, who capitalised on the high attrition rate to secure an excellent fifth-place finish.
Lawson’s RB teammate Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top six, while the remainder of the top 10 featured Pierre Gasly, Alexander Albon, Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso, who finally opened his account for the season with a points-scoring finish.
Barcelona Grand Prix Preview
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya presents a completely different challenge to Monaco. Featuring a blend of high-speed and technical low-speed corners, the Spanish venue provides a stern test of car balance, tyre management and outright pace.
Unlike Monaco’s narrow streets, Barcelona offers multiple overtaking opportunities. Recent circuit changes have enhanced racing further, with active aero zones between Turns 3 and 4, 5 and 7, and 9 and 10. Turn 10 has also been widened, while the former chicane at Turns 14 and 15 has been removed to improve racing flow.
Last season’s Spanish Grand Prix ended in a McLaren one-two, with Oscar Piastri leading teammate Lando Norris home. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium.
Weather conditions are expected to be ideal throughout the weekend, with clear skies and temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius.
Value Bet
Lewis Hamilton – Top 3 Finish
Hamilton showed encouraging pace in Monaco and boasts an outstanding record in Barcelona, with six victories and a further six podium finishes at the circuit. Ferrari may find conditions more challenging on a faster track, but at 11/4, the seven-time world champion looks a worthwhile option for another podium finish.
Race Winner
Kimi Antonelli
I’ve avoided backing Antonelli for outright victory so far this season, but after five consecutive wins, it’s becoming impossible to look elsewhere.
Although he retired from this race last year, he showed promising pace throughout the weekend and qualified sixth. Given his current form, he deserves favouritism and remains the driver everyone else must beat.
