The race at Albert Park in Melbourne will also see the debut of Cadillac in the sport, as well as German carmaker Audi, hitting the track for the first time.

New Era of Regulations

2026 introduces a massive overhaul of regulations for F1. The cars are lighter and smaller, which means lower downforce, and the hybrid system features a larger battery. The electric motor generates around 50% of the power, with the remaining power from the combustion engine.

Other changes include active aerodynamics replacing DRS, and drivers will use a new manual electric boost, ‘override mode’, for overtaking.

It sets the scene for an interesting weekend Down Under as the drivers will get accustomed to their new machinery.

The Track

Albert Park offers 5.278km of high-speed sweeps coupled with heavy braking zones. Cars with a well-sorted chassis will perform well as the track is littered with corners that drivers can chuck the car into. According to F1.com,  Melbourne is also one of the faster tracks on the calendar, with Lando Norris’ 2025 pole lap set at an average of over 250km/h. Look out for a Safety Car as the circuit has walls that drivers can sometimes find themselves close to.

Another variable factor over the Australian weekend could be the weather. The race takes place at the start of autumn (one week earlier than last year), a period characterised by frequent temperature swings and rainfall. Intermittent showers significantly affected the 2025 race, won by Lando Norris on Intermediates.

Piastri’s Home Race, Mercedes Quiet Favourites

In 2025, Australian driver Oscar Piastri missed out on winning his first world championship by a couple of points. This year, the aim is to go one better for McLaren. However, the reigning constructors’ champions seem to be the third fastest based on pre-season testing.

All eyes are on Mercedes and Ferrari, whose new cars possess pace and reliability that could see them at the top in practice and qualifying.

However, with brand-new cars and teams still learning the energy systems, the Australian GP could be one of the most unpredictable season openers in years.

Look out for Alpine, now sporting Mercedes engine power, and Haas, which showed good form in testing.
