South Africa’s Proteas Women had a tough start to their T20 World Cup campaign, falling to a 65-run defeat against Australia in Manchester despite some solid bowling efforts.
The Proteas Women’s ICC T20 World Cup began on the wrong foot as they suffered a 65-run defeat to Australia in their Group 1 match at Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday.
Australia, after winning the toss, chose to bat first and made full use of the decision with a strong batting performance.
Australia Set the Tone with a Big Total
Australia posted an impressive 172 for 8 in their 20 overs, driven by a fast and fearless start. Phoebe Litchfield was the star of the innings, smashing 50 runs from just 24 balls and putting immediate pressure on the South African bowlers.
The Australian innings stayed on track thanks to important contributions in the middle order. Elyse Perry added 36 from 26 deliveries, while Georgia Wareham supported with a quick 32 off 22 balls. Even though the opening pair did not contribute much, Australia recovered well and continued to build a competitive total.
Annabel Sutherland and Nicola Carey also played useful cameos, scoring 21 and 13 respectively, ensuring Australia finished strongly and set a challenging target for the Proteas.

Proteas Bowlers Show Fight Despite Pressure
The Proteas Women had some positive moments with the ball despite the tough conditions. Nonkululeko Mlaba, Ayabonga Khaka, and Nadine de Klerk each picked up two wickets, breaking partnerships at key stages and slowing Australia’s momentum at times.
However, the overall total proved to be too high, as Australia’s depth and aggressive batting carried them to a strong finish in their allotted overs.
Laura Wolvaardt showed resilience at the top of the order, scoring 44 off 39 balls and holding the innings together for as long as possible. Sune Luus, however, fell early for just one run, adding to the early trouble in the chase.
