Proteas Women coach focusing on spin challenge ahead of T20 World Cup
Proteas Women head coach Mandla Mashimbyi says the team must improve against spin bowling ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, despite encouraging progress in their bowling unit and recent series win over India.
Proteas Women head coach Mandla Mashimbyi says the team still has work to do before the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, especially when it comes to handling spin bowling.
While he is generally happy with the team’s preparations, Mashimbyi highlighted concerns around the middle order’s ability to deal with spin during the middle overs. He pointed out that most teams will rely heavily on spin in that phase of the game, making it a key area for improvement.
Mashimbyi explained that once the batters become more comfortable against spin, the Proteas could put serious pressure on their opponents.

South Africa will head into the tournament hoping to finally go one step further after finishing as runners up in the last two editions of the competition.
On a positive note, the coach is pleased with the bowling unit’s progress. Following a strong 4-1 T20 series win over India, he believes the team showed maturity, better decision making, and clearer execution of plans. This is something that has not always been consistent in the past.
Mashimbyi added that maintaining that same energy and clarity will be crucial if the Proteas want to win the World Cup. He also mentioned that fielding, particularly catching, remains another area that needs improvement.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup gets underway on 12 June in England, with South Africa set to begin their campaign against Australia the following day.
