United Rugby Championship Predictions – Round 15

The Race to the Eight ramps up as the United Rugby Championship resumes this weekend, writes Quintin van Jaarsveld.

After a two-week break to accommodate the start of the knockout stages of the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, the URC returns, and with just four rounds of regular-season action remaining, we’re on the final stretch on the road to the playoffs.

The Stormers and the Lions will want to make their home ground advantage count, while the Bulls and the Sharks are abroad in Round 15.

The men from Pretoria face the Dragons in Newport on Friday night, while the rest of the South African sides will continue their campaigns on Saturday.

The Stormers and Lions will host Connacht and the Glasgow Warriors in Cape Town and Johannesburg, respectively, while the Sharks are in Swansea for a must-win battle against the Ospreys.

Edinburgh v Zebre

Friday, 17 April- 20:45

Two teams who are out of playoff contention will hope to record a morale-boosting victory in the Scottish capital.

Thirteenth-ranked Edinburgh will be overjoyed to be home after enduring a torrid time on the road. Heavy losses in Johannesburg and Cape Town were followed by a 49-31 defeat in Dublin, which marked their Champions Cup exit.

Dead last in the URC, Zebre had a spring in their step over the last fortnight, but after a 31-15 win over Pau, they lost their home Challenge Cup quarter-final 35-32 to the Dragons last weekend, and with it, possibly their last bit of motivation.

Chalk up a win for the hosts.

Prediction: Edinburgh by 12.

Suggested Bet: Zebre +18 at 1.90.

Dragons v Bulls

Friday, 17 April- 20:45

After giving the Warriors a massive scare in their eventual 25-21 Champions Cup quarter-final defeat in Glasgow, the Bulls have had an extra week to sharpen their horns for this battle of the beasts.

The Dragons might be second from bottom, but the Bulls are catching them at the worst possible time, with the Welsh minnows fresh from pulling off back-to-back upsets in the Challenge Cup knockouts. First, they triumphed 36-31 over Stade Francais in Paris in the Round of 16, and then they pipped Zebre by three points in Parma last weekend.

That being said, the Bulls are in a different league, especially when it comes to pure power. On the bubble in eighth place, they cannot afford to lose this one. Johan Ackermann’s men have won all four previous encounters between the teams comfortably, including two in Newport, and this should be no different.

Prediction: Bulls by 14.

Suggested Bet: Bulls -12 at 1.90.

Ulster v Leinster

Friday, 17 April – 20:45

A blockbuster Irish derby is in store in Belfast, where third-placed Ulster host fourth-placed Leinster.

Both teams delivered dominant performances on the European front last weekend, Ulster thrashing French giants La Rochelle 41-24 to advance to the Challenge Cup semi-finals and Leinster lashing the Sale Sharks 43-13 to book their place in the final four of the Champions Cup.

Leinster are starting to have that familiar, unstoppable look about them and have had Ulster’s number in recent times. It won’t be easy, but Leinster should secure their fifth straight victory in this rivalry.

Prediction: Leinster by 5.

Suggested Bet: Leinster -2 at 1.90.

Stormers v Connacht

Saturday, 18 April – 13:45

The Stormers will have added motivation when they run onto the pitch on Saturday.

In second place, the clash against Connacht is crucial for the Capetonians to potentially close the gap on log leaders Glasgow, but that won’t be their main focus.

No, this game is all about honouring Christopher “Chippie” Solomon, the Stormers’ long-serving and beloved team manager, who passed away after suffering a heart attack last Saturday.

Connacht are a quality side and were on a six-match winning streak in all competitions before their 45-22 Challenge Cup quarter-final loss to Montpellier last time out. Currently ninth, they’ll fight tooth and nail.

That said, we saw the Sharks blank Munster 45-0 the week in which centre Ethan Hooker’s father passed away last month, and I expect a similarly inspired performance from the Stormers in this one.

Prediction: Stormers by 22.

Suggested Bet: Stormers -21 at 1.90.

Lions v Glasgow Warriors

Saturday, 18 April – 16:00

It’s that time of the season where local teams aren’t just fighting for playoff places but also have opportunities to do each other a favour.

The Lions could land such a double blow on Saturday as a win would see them cement their place in the top five and possibly help the Stormers snatch pole position from Glasgow’s grasp.

The Pride have had two weeks to prepare for this humdinger, which coach Ivan van Rooyen has compared to a Test match.

They’re high on confidence, not only because they’re on a four-game winning streak, but also because they won both previous meetings between the teams at Ellis Park (35-24 in 2023 and 44-21 in 2024).

Their plan is in place, and they would’ve picked up a few extra pointers from the Bulls, who pushed the Scots close, and Toulon, who stunned them last weekend. Unfortunately for the Lions, and the rest of the South African sides, Glasgow’s shock Champions Cup quarter-final exit is not a good thing.

Bitterly disappointed, the Warriors will be plotting a backlash this weekend and can turn their full attention to the URC from here on out, which will make them that much tougher to beat.

The Lions have the weapons to win this war, and with the Warriors dealing with a number of injuries, I’m tipping the hosts to take it.

Prediction: Lions by 2.

Suggested Bet: Glasgow Warriors +9 at 1.90.

Scarlets v Cardiff

Saturday, 18 April – 18:30

While the 14th-ranked Scarlets only have pride to play for, this is a vital game for sixth-placed Cardiff to consolidate their place in the top eight.

Wins have been hard to come by for both of these Welsh teams in 2026; the Scarlets have only tasted victory twice and Cardiff three times. Cardiff were guilty of one of the game’s cardinal sins, namely overlooking their opponents, the last time these two teams met and suffered a 21-17 loss as a result.

They would’ve learned their lesson, and by paying their rivals the requisite respect, they should exact revenge.

Prediction: Cardiff by 6.

Suggested Bet: Cardiff at 1.90.

Ospreys v Sharks

Saturday, 18 April – 20:45

By sending a weakened team to Galway to crash out of the Challenge Cup Round of 16, Sharks coach JP Pietersen has pushed all his chips to the middle in the high-stakes poker game that is the URC.

Seven points outside the top eight in 10th place, it’s do-or-die for the Durbanites for the duration of the run-in to the playoffs. The Ospreys are a further three points back in 11th but are clinging onto hope and won’t go down without a fight.

Prior to the aforementioned 29-12 defeat to Connacht, the Sharks mauled Munster 45-0 and saw off Cardiff 21-15. The Ospreys, meanwhile, have lost three in a row in all competitions, but it’s worth mentioning that all three were away from home.

Even though they won their last two home games against the Dragons (19-13) and Ulster (21-10), the Ospreys are a team the star-studded Sharks should beat, and I’m banking on them to do just that.

Prediction: Sharks by 5.

Suggested Bet: Sharks -2 at 1.90.

Benetton v Munster

Saturday, 18 April – 20:45

Sport is as psychological as it is physical, if not more so, and Benetton’s mental makeup will undergo a stern examination on Saturday.

After their heartbreaking 44-41 Challenge Cup quarter-final loss to the Exeter Chiefs at home last weekend, will the Italians – who are also out of the URC playoff race – find the necessary fight within, or will they roll over for the Red Army?

After a winless South African tour, this business trip to Treviso is about getting back on track for the seventh-ranked Irishmen, and they’re set to achieve that goal.

Prediction: Munster by 9.

Suggested Bet: Munster -2 at 1.90.
