Bafana Bafana Makes World Cup History

Bafana Bafana secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time on Wednesday, defeating South Korea 1-0 to complete a remarkable turnaround after a disappointing start to the tournament.

Competing in their first World Cup since hosting the event in 2010, South Africa was heavily criticised following a 2-0 opening defeat to Group A winners Mexico. However, a determined draw against the Czech Republic set up a decisive final group match against South Korea in Monterrey.

Coach Hugo Broos’ side rose to the occasion, claiming second place in the group thanks to Thapelo Maseko’s decisive second-half goal.

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo came up with a shocking line-up before kick-off by leaving captain Son Heung-min, who is widely regarded as one of Asia’s greatest footballers, on the bench.

The Koreans started on a positive note, with stand-in captain Kim Min-jae seeing a powerful header cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, while Lee Kang-in narrowly missed the target.

Bafana soon found their rhythm, playing with energy and intent, but struggled to convert their chances. Their best opportunity of the first half came in the 30th minute when Evidence Makgopa pounced on a rebound after goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu saved Thalente Mbatha’s effort, only to direct his shot straight at the keeper from close range.

Hong responded at halftime by introducing Son as part of a triple substitution in an attempt to spark his side into life.

Both teams created chances early in the second half. Maseko failed to capitalise on a promising opening, while South Korea striker Oh Hyeon-gyu tested Ronwen Williams at the opposite end.

With Mexico leading the Czech Republic in the other Group A match, the stakes grew even higher. Bafana Bafana seized their opportunity in the 63rd minute when super sub Tshepang Moremi delivered a cross to Maseko, who calmly fired past the goalkeeper at the near post.

South Korea pressed relentlessly in search of an equaliser, but Bafana Bafana held firm to secure a famous victory.

The result sends Bafana Bafana into the last 32, where they will face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28.

Mexico finished top of Group A with a perfect nine points, winning all three of their matches.
