Stellenbosch v Kaizer Chiefs – Preview, Predictions and Best Bets
Stellenbosch face Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Knockout Cup last-16 on Sunday.
The Glamour Boys have won seven of the last eight tussles between the clubs and are chasing silverware after ending a 10-year trophy drought in May.
Match: Stellenbosch v Kaizer Chiefs
When: Sunday, 05 Oct 2025
Stellenbosch Form
Stellies are having a difficult season with just three wins in 13 matches across all competitions. After beating Marumo Gallants 1-0 in the PSL in Round Four, they’re winless in six fixtures. A 1-0 home loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the league preceded a 3-0 MTN8 final loss to Orlando Pirates after extra-time.
They were beaten 2-1 at AmaZulu despite having 14 shots. A 1-0 home loss to Richards Bay saw 70% possession. They have returned to basics of late with two 0-0 draws. A stalemate at home versus Durban City was followed by a goalless draw at Chippa United with 60% possession but just 0.95 xG.
Stellenbosch Team News
Centre back Thabo Maloisane has not played in the last two matches. He was not in the squad at Chippa and could be on the bench here with Athenkosi Mcaba preferred.
Ashley Cupido has shaken off an injury and is competing with Lehlohonolo Mojela to play up front. Andre De Jong will start despite a deadline-day move to Orlando Pirates falling through.
Stellenbosch Motivation
Stellies have made three cup finals in three years and will take this competition very seriously. They will go all out to end their hoodoo against Chiefs and reach the last eight.
An intense and aggressive approach is expected. They were too defensive in earlier matches, but they’re also focusing on rebuilding confidence with clean sheets.
Kaizer Chiefs Form
Chiefs’ fine start to the season with 13 points (four wins, one draw) in the first five league matches feels like a distant memory now. A 3-1 home loss to Sekhukhune United saw them exposed aerially. That defeat was coach Nasreddine Nabi’s final match as head coach.
It’s just one win in four matches under the caretaker co-coaches. They lost 1-0 in Luanda to Kabuscorp in the CAF Champions League qualifying round. A 1-1 home PSL draw saw a lead surrendered. A 1-0 home win over Kabuscorp preceded a win on penalties. Amakhosi were excellent in midweek as they outshot AmaZulu 23-3 but could only draw 1-1.
Kaizer Chiefs Team News
There are a number of injuries in the Chiefs squad. Long-term injury victims, Rushwin Dortley and Given Msimango are still out. Thabiso Monyane is doubtful at right back for this one, as is fellow fullback Paseko Mako.
Siphesihle Ndlovu has missed the last two fixtures. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo could be preferred to Thabo Cele in midfield. Etiosa Ighodaro is not available up front. Ashley Du Preez could be an option against his former club.
Kaizer Chiefs Motivation
Amakhosi will be fully focused on this competition. They want to build on last season’s Nedbank Cup success with another trophy.
The side are playing on the front foot right now and will attack Stellies. Confidence will be high due to their excellent record against the Winelands club.
