Betting Notebook: PSL Matchday 18
A statistical preview on the midweek PSL games
After an eventful weekend in the Nedbank Cup that saw big teams knocked out unexpectedly, league action resumes on Tuesday. Four teams will play catch up on their Matchday 18 games, with a couple of title challengers involved. In Durban, AmaZulu will host Sundowns looking to continue their fine start to 2026. At the same time, Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch continue their rivalry, as Gavin Hunt returns to face his former side. Our Betting Notebook is a statistical preview of the midweek games.
AmaZulu (5th) v Sundowns (2nd)
For the second time in a week, Sundowns face a serious test of their title aspirations away from home. Last week, they passed the Orlando Pirates away test, sending a clear statement to all that they will not let go of their title easily. On Tuesday, they face a different, but equally tricky test against a team in form. AmaZulu have won four of the five games they’ve played in 2026, and have progressed to the Nedbank Cup quarter finals. The confidence gained from progressing in a Cup where Sundowns failed to progress could make the difference.
Interestingly, the bookmakers still favour Downs here, with the odds suggesting a 63% implied porbabulity for the away win compared to 18% for the hosts. Sundowns away form has been a worry all season – they’ve won just five of 15 games on the road, but their head-to-head against AmaZulu may be the bigger factor that was considered in this instance.
31 – Sundowns have won 31 times against AmaZulu in the league, the most wins by one opponent against another in PSL history.

Kaizer Chiefs v Stellenbosch
Just three weeks after Stellenbosch eliminated Kaizer Chiefs from the Nedbank Cup, the two teams will meet again in the league on Tuesday night. The Cup victory was expected to be a springboard for Gavin Hunt’s charges, but it has been far from it. Since then, Stellies have failed to win the subsequent four games, losing two and drawing two, including elimination from the same Cup this past weekend. The chief concern for them is that they have scored just once in that time, indicating that they are still a work-in-progress under their new coach.
Chiefs, meanwhile, have had a 10 day rest since their latest game – another disappointment in the form of CAF elimination. But they are heavily favoured to win here (about 60% win probability implied by the odds), while Stellies are less than 20%. This chasm is illustrated by their respective home/away forms. Stellies have won two away games all season (out of 15), while Chiefs have lost just one home game all season (P14 W8 D5 L1 all comps). Indeed, they are currently enjoying the better part of that run.
10 – Kaizer Chiefs are unbeaten in 10 home games (P10 W6 D4 L0 all comps)
