The Champions League holders in PSG play host to Atalanta on Wednesday.
Match: PSG vs Atalanta
When: Wednesday, 17 September 2025
PSG Form
PSG were incredible last season, winning the league, Coupe de France and UEFA Champions League. They were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final. This season began with a win on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup after coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Tottenham.
In domestic action, it’s four wins from four since then. A 1-0 win at Nantes preceded a narrow 1-0 home in over Angers. They were back to their free-flowing selves in a 6-3 win at Toulouse as Joao Neves scored a hattrick. On Sunday, they beat Lens 2-0 despite putting up just 1.07 xG.
PSG Team News
Coach Luis Enrique saw three players go off injured in the last match. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia needs a late fitness test whilst Lee Kang-in will be fit. Lucas Beraldo is unlikely to play any part due to a sprained ankle.
Speedy forwards Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué are both ruled out for the encounter. Bradley Barcola and Goncalo Ramos could start in their place.
PSG Motivation
PSG will be determined to start this defence of the Champions League with a win. This tournament is the priority as they cruise through Ligue 1 matches.
An attacking, positive approach is expected. They will look to dominate and won’t sit back despite the threat that Atalanta carry.
Atalanta Form
Atalanta finished third in Serie A last season. From round 32 to round 37 last term, they won five of six matches with three clean sheets. The season finished with a 3-2 defeat to Parma on the final day.
After a mixed preseason calendar, they’ve drawn their first two matches of the new season. New coach Ivan Juric saw his side overshoot Pisa 21-11 but they could only draw 1-1. A 1-1 draw at Parma saw an equaliser conceded in the 85th minute. On Sunday, they smashed Lecce 4-1 in a strong outing.
Atalanta Team News
Ademola Lookman has a muscle injury and will miss this match as rumours swirl over his future. Physical striker Gianluca Scamacca is nursing a hamstring injury and this match comes too soon for him.
Defenders Mitchel Bakker and Sead Kolasinac are out, whilst key midfielder Ederson needs a late fitness test.
Atalanta Motivation
Coach Ivan Juric has said that he sees PSG struggling against low blocks. He could therefore sit deep. Atalanta are not going to be as attacking and positive as under Gasperini.
A draw in Paris would feel like a win and Atalanta will look to be hard to beat.
Key Stats
PSG have won 14 of their last 17 matches
PSG’s Bradley Barcola has scored 4 goals in his last 4 matches
Atalanta have seen Both Teams to Score in their last 6 matches
Atalanta’s last 9 away UCL matches have seen 38 goals (16 conceded, 22 scored)
Verdict
PSG are missing two key forwards, but so are Atalanta. That could mean a slightly lower-scoring affair. PSG should have far too much on the night.
