World Cup Preview: Morocco vs Haiti

Morocco go into their Group C match against Haiti as clear favourites, with top spot still in reach. Here’s a look at the prediction, and what to expect from the game.

Morocco faces Haiti in Atlanta for the World Cup Knockout phase qualifier. From where Morocco stand, they have a good chance to proceed to the next stage.

Things are not looking up for Haiti on the other hand since they have already conceded four times in two games. It looks like they will concede again in this match.

Morocco

Morocco have made history in African football four years ago, taking down some of the world’s elite teams and showing that an African side could go deep in a major tournament.

Now, with Yassine Bounou once again expected to lead with goal, Morocco head into this match determined to prove that their Qatar run was no isolated breakthrough.

Morocco is expected to win this match after well played previous matches. On paper, Morocco is much stronger. They have better players and a more organised team in every area of the pitch. There is also a big difference in motivation.

Haiti

Motivation can make a big difference in football, and Haiti have very little left to play for after being eliminated from the tournament. They have been knocked out of the World Cup after losing their first two games against Scotland and Brazil.

Although Haiti have not defended badly overall, they may struggle against Morocco’s energy and attacking quality. There is also a chance that Haiti could rotate their squad and give some fringe players an opportunity. That could make the challenge even tougher against one of the stronger teams in the group.

What’s at stake

Morocco still has a chance to finish top of the group, but it depends on the result of the other Group C match between Brazil and Scotland, which is being played at the same time. Because goal difference could decide who finishes first, Morocco will try to win by as many goals as possible. A win or draw against Haiti will guarantee Morocco’s progression to the next round.

Even though they have been eliminated, Haiti will want to finish their World Cup journey with pride, but that is not the same as playing for a win.

Players to watch

  • Ismael Saibari – Morocco

Saibari will be hoping to continue his impressive scoring form when Morocco face Haiti. The 25-year-old has scored in both of Morocco’s World Cup matches so far and has looked dangerous every time he gets on the ball. Although naturally an attacking midfielder, coach Mohamed Ouahbi has recently used him in a more advanced role, and the move has paid off.

Saibari nearly scored against Scotland when his shot, which took a slight deflection, hit the crossbar in the second half. He was involved throughout the game and getting into several dangerous attacking positions. He also worked hard defensively, winning the ball back three times. As Morocco look for a big victory, Saibari could once again play a key role.

Predictions

Morocco not only have more quality across the pitch, but they also have plenty to play for. With top spot in Group C still within reach, they will be motivated to score as many goals as possible, especially if goal difference becomes the deciding factor.

Expect Morocco to control possession, create the majority of the chances, and push for goals throughout the match. Haiti may defend deep, but Morocco’s attacking quality should eventually prove too much.

Prediction: Morocco 3-0 Haiti
