World Cup Preview: Bafana Bafana vs South Korea, What’s at Stake

The stakes are big for Bafana Bafana and South Korea as they face each other in their final match of Group A at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Monterrey.

This will be an open encounter; both nations are chasing to qualify for the knockout stages as co-hosts Mexico having already qualified for the next round at the World Cup, this means a second place for South Africa and Korea is still wide open.

Bafana Bafana

Bafana Bafana arrives in this with two major suspensions as key midfielder Teboho Mokoena is suspended after accumulating yellow cards. His absence is a massive blow, considering he scored the crucial equaliser against Czechia and is the team’s midfield leader. However, the good news from the South African camp is that Sphephelo Sithole returns from suspension and is expected to slot straight back into midfield as Mokoena will be missing.

Playmaker Themba Zwane remains suspended after receiving a three-match ban following his red card against Mexico. But Relebohile Mofokeng is expected to fill that role, as he came in the second half against Czechia and changed the game for Mzansi.

South Korea

For the Koreans, head coach Hong Myung-bo has a nearly fully fit squad available for selection, with no injuries or suspension concerns reported ahead of the match. Captain Son Heung-min is also fit and ready to play, despite being substituted early in the previous game against Mexico, a decision that was made for tactical reasons rather than due to any injury issue.

What’s at Stake

South Africa started their World Cup journey with a 2-0 deficit to Mexico and played a 1-1 draw against Czechia. Now their mandate is clear if they want to progress to the round of 32. Bafana needs a win to keep their hopes alive, and should they do that and Czechia play a draw or lose against the co-hosting nation, Coach Hugo Broos’ side will finish as runners-up of Group A and face the winner of Group B in the knockout phase.

Korea won their opening match against the Czech Republic and lost to Mexico; they are currently in second position with three points. A win or draw will be enough for them to advance to the next round of the tournament.

Players to Watch

Relebohile Mofokeng – South Africa

In their last game, Mofokeng came in the second half and changed the game for Bafana; they looked more dangerous going forward. Should Broos start the 21-year-old, he will be crucial in making those passes and creating chances for Bafana to score.

Oswin Appollis – South Africa

With Mokoena suspended, more attacking responsibility falls on Appollis. His dribbling and direct running could provide South Africa’s best route to goal.

Thapelo Maseko – South Africa

Maseko’s pace and attacking instincts to stretch the Korean defence, creating space in wide areas and forcing defenders out of position. His ability to exploit gaps behind the back line could prove crucial in launching quick counterattacks, allowing South Africa to transition rapidly from defence to attack and capitalise on any defensive vulnerabilities shown by Korea.

Son Heung-min – South Korea

The captain is South Korea’s talisman. His ability to drift into pockets of space, attack defenders one-on-one, and finish clinically makes him the biggest threat on the pitch. With qualification on the line, South Korea will look to Son for inspiration.

Verdict

This promises to be an open, high-intensity contest. South Africa’s desperation for a win should make them adventurous, but South Korea possess more experience and attacking quality, especially through Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in. Tip Bafana to win or draw.
