With Bafana Bafana set to face Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attention will not only be on South Africa as a team, but also on Mbokazi, who continues to attract widespread admiration.

Mbokazi has been a model of consistency since being promoted to Orlando Pirates’ senior team.

His impressive performances earned him a call-up to the national team, where he quickly established himself as a valuable asset under coach Hugo Broos.

His fast rise caught the attention of Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire, who secured his signature. Since making the move to the MLS, Mbokazi has become a regular starter and one of the league’s standout young talents.

Born in Hluhluwe in the Northern of KwaZulu-Natal, the 20-year-old was recently named in the 2026 MLS All-Star Starting XI after receiving more fan votes than any other player in the league.

Mbokazi is set to line up alongside Lionel Messi against the Liga MX All-Stars in Charlotte on July 29, 2026, marking another historic milestone in his growing career.

Speaking on SuperSport TV, John Terry said he has been impressed not only by Mbokazi’s abilities on the pitch but also by his mentality and attitude, qualities he believes are essential for success at the highest level.

“I think he is a top player,” Terry said.

“I think he’s actually got the potential to be one of the big stars among the defenders and young players coming through, and that can be really positive for the team.

“I really like him. I like his attitude and the mentality side of things that I see. So I’m excited to see him against some bigger and better opposition throughout this tournament.”

The Bafana game against Mexico will kick-off at 9:00PM South African time at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Bet on the World Cup now with bet.co.za.
