As we approach the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it’s time to take a deep dive into the records and statistics that have defined the tournament so far. With this being the largest World Cup ever, records are bound to be broken.  

Since the competition began in 1930, 80 different nations have qualified for the World Cup final. These nations have created unforgettable memories, all the while setting incredible records along the way.  

But only eight nations have ever held the trophy, and only one nation has ever qualified for every World Cup. Let’s take a closer look into these teams as well as the ones who have set other FIFA World Cup records.  

Most FIFA World Cup Wins 

Every nation dreams of holding up the FIFA World Cup trophy at the end of the tournament. But only eight nations have ever lifted the trophy.

Brazil remains the most successful team in World Cup history with five titles and many more brilliant players behind their name. Germany and Italy follow closely behind, each with four wins. Argentina follows with 3 World Cup titles after being the reigning champions of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.  

Most FIFA World Cup Appearances  

Qualifying for the FIFA World Cup, especially in the old format of 32 teams, is an achievement in and of itself. But, for some nations, featuring in the World Cup is almost a norm.  

• Brazil – 22 appearances  

• Germany – 20 appearances 

• Argentina – 18 appearances 

• Italy – 18 appearances 

• Mexico – 17 appearances 

With the new format introduced, we will now see more teams getting a chance to play on the biggest stage. For example, in Africa, we only had five teams playing in the tournament, but now we have 10 teams playing in the competition. This shows that more teams will stand a chance to have more appearances in the World Cup than ever before.  

Most Goals in World Cup History 

Scoring a singular goal at the World Cup is amazing. Scoring more than one goal is how legends are made. Every striker dreams of scoring on the world stage at least once. Few have done it consistently. And even less have done it over 10 times.

• Ronaldo Nazário – 15 goals  

• Gerd Müller – 14 goals 

• Lionel Messi – 13 goals 

• Just Fonaine – 13 goals

• Kylian Mbappé – 12 goals 

Germany’s Miroslav Klose currently holds the record for the most goals scored in World Cup history. He managed to score 16 goals across four tournaments.  

While this is remarkable, Just Fonaine takes the cup, scoring 13 goals in one tournament during the 1958 FIFA World Cup.  

Most World Cup Matches Played 

The World Cup creates legends and maintains its momentum throughout every generation. The record for the most World Cup matches played shows the players’ consistency, durability, and excellence on football’s biggest stage.

Biggest Winning Margin in FIFA World Cup History 

Let’s throw it back to 1982 when Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1 during the group stages. This defeat remains both the highest-scoring game ever played as well as the biggest winning margin in the tournament.  

Youngest Goalscorer 

During the 1958 FIFA World Cup, Pelé made history being the youngest goalscorer at only 17 years and 239 days old. This historic moment secured Brazil a spot in the semifinals. 

Later in that same tournament, Pelé became the youngest player to score a hat-trick in Brazil’s semi-final win over France. This secured them a spot in the final, where they beat Sweden and won the championship.  

Oldest Goalscorer 

At the age of 42 years and 39 days, Roger Milla became the oldest goalscorer at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He scored in a group stage match against Russia. This record was recognised by both FIFA and Guinness World Records. It has since become a monumental achievement for African football.
