Soweto Derby Rematch: Can Chiefs end trophy drought?
The Nedbank Cup final takes place this Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
The match is set to deliver another captivating chapter in the storied rivalry between Pirates and Chiefs and an opportunity for both teams to create history. Chiefs have the chance to end their near decade-long trophy drought while it is likely Jose Riveiro’s last opportunity to win a trophy and end his time at the club on a high.
Match: Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates
When: Saturday, 10 May 2025
Where: Moses Mabhida Stadium
Orlando Pirates
The Buccaneers enter the final buoyed by a resurgent display against Chiefs in the league derby last weekend., They controlled the midfield battle, particularly in the second half. Kabelo Dlamini’s influence in the middle third was instrumental, as his advanced positioning and tempo control allowed Pirates to push forward and exploit the left channel, where Mohau Nkota consistently caused problems for Chiefs. The main question will be which players Riveiro uses and whether they will allow Chiefs to take control of the game from the start (as in the league game).
The tactical shift at half-time last weekend was instrumental in allowing Pirates to control the game with Deon Hotto showing again why he is one of the best wide players in the PSL. Converting their attacking creativity will be key to taking a foothold in the game.
Kaizer Chiefs
Chiefs, on the other hand, face the daunting task of regrouping both tactically and mentally after last week’s loss. The real question on everyone’s mind will be who will start – with the inclusion of Makabi Lilepo last week as the central striker a surprising option for many.
With Wandile Duba back from suspension, he is rather spoilt for choice. Furthermore, the midfield options will need to be upgraded from last week. Chiefs may also consider bringing Ashley Du Preez into the attack to add a direct threat behind Pirates’ high defensive line, offering a more unpredictable element to their forward play.
Defensively, the suspension of Bradley Cross necessitates a rethink on the left side. Chiefs could opt to shift their right back to cover or introduce a less experienced option. In either case, the concern remains that Pirates will once again target this area with Nkota’s pace and Hotto’s movement, both of whom excelled in exploiting the flanks in the last encounter.
Edge
Psychologically, Pirates hold a slight edge given their recent dominance and their growing confidence in games. Chiefs, however, have the opportunity to learn from their previous encounter, avoiding emotional overreaction and focusing on maintaining structure, particularly in the first half. If they can weather the initial pressure and find a foothold in the game, they could cause problems for Pirates.
Ultimately, the final is poised to be a tactical battle where transitions, set pieces, and psychological resilience will play pivotal roles. Pirates will look to assert themselves early, while Chiefs must balance caution with attacking intent. In what promises to be another intense Soweto Derby, the margins will be razor-thin, and a moment of brilliance or a costly mistake could well decide the fate of the Nedbank Cup.
