Weekend Racing Preview at Greyville Racecourse

Another huge weekend of racing heads to Greyville Racecourse as the Daily News 2000 and Woolavington 2000 take centre stage. Veez breaks down the leading contenders, value picks, and best bets for all nine races on the card.

What a weekend of racing we had last Saturday. The Festival of Speed absolutely lived up to the hype and gave us moments that racing fans will be talking about for years to come. But if there’s one thing about the KZN season, it’s that the big race days just keep coming, and this weekend is another cracker.

All eyes will be on the Grade 1 Daily News 2000, where we should finally get a proper answer to who the best three-year-old in the country is over 2000 metres. This race has a proper history behind it as well.

Over the years, we’ve seen top-class horses like Legislate, Hawwaam, and Got The Greenlight win this race before going on to do massive things at stud. One thing we know for sure is that you need to be very good to win the Daily News.

This year, a lot of the attention will be on Note To Self from the Justin Snaith yard. He’s only had seven starts but has already shown plenty of quality and consistency, never finishing outside the top three.

His last run behind Okavango and reigning Horse of the Year Eight On Eighteen really caught the eye for me. He stayed on strongly late and looked like a horse crying out for this sort of trip. From draw six, I honestly think he’s going to take a lot of beating.

The other big race on the card is the Grade 2 Woolavington 2000 and on paper it looks like Wish List is the one they all have to beat. Winning both the Cape Derby and KZN Guineas already tells you what kind of filly she is. It really is no surprise to see her at the top of the betting.

I do think there could be some value elsewhere, and the one that interests me most is Beach Verse from the Candice Bass-Robinson stable. She tries the 2000 metres for the first time, and her breeding suggests she could absolutely love it.

Being by Vercingetorix out of Beach Beauty is serious pedigree.  I wouldn’t be shocked at all if she wins. Enjoy the racing this weekend, and hopefully we can find a few winners along the way.

There’s nothing quite like big race days at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, and being my home track, it always makes these weekends feel that little bit more special.

Until next week, this is Veez Corner.
