Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge 2026 Preview: Can The Real Prince Conquer the Mile?
A competitive renewal of the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge sees top-class milers clash at Greyville, with the Justin Snaith yard holding a strong hand through See It Again and Eight On Eighteen. However, all eyes are on The Real Prince, whose promising comeback run and proven class over a mile make him the standout selection in a race that could reveal key Durban July contenders.
The race where the best horse over the mile trip normally wins. Some outstanding horses have gone on to claim this prestigious contest in recent years, none more notable than Dave The King and the now-stallion Charles Dickens.
This year’s renewal of the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge has the powerful Justin Snaith yard dominating the betting boards, with reigning Met winner See It Again and reigning South African Horse of the Year Eight On Eighteen heading the market.
The current third favourite, and my top selection, is the reigning Durban July winner, The Real Prince. While he won the July over further, I firmly believe his best trip is the mile, having already captured the King’s Plate earlier this year. His comeback run in the Drill Hall Stakes was full of encouragement. He finished strongly from well back in the field and quickened up nicely late on, suggesting there is plenty more to come. With that run under his belt, he should strip much fitter and arrive at this race absolutely primed for a big performance.
The other major race on the card is the Cup Trial, where all eyes will be on Regulation. He has already built up a strong following among punters who believe he could be a serious Durban July contender. Looking at the current July log, it appears Regulation will likely need a victory on Saturday to secure his place in the Grade 1 showpiece, unless a number of horses currently above him in the standings elect not to take their place in the race.
This meeting has always been a magnificent curtain-raiser to the Durban July. The performances we see on Saturday will provide some valuable clues as to what we can expect when Africa’s greatest horse race takes centre stage at the end of the month.
As always, enjoy the racing, bet responsibly, and let’s hope we uncover a few Durban July stars in the making.
