T20 World Cup Betting Preview: South Africa vs New Zealand
We’re down to the final four teams in the T20 World Cup as the Super 8s phase was wrapped up on Sunday.
On Wednesday, South Africa faces New Zealand for a second time in the competition, and both teams have yet to win the trophy. The Proteas ended their Super 8s campaign as the only unbeaten side in the tournament after beating their neighbours, Zimbabwe.
Thursday’s encounter pits the defending champions and co-hosts India against two-time winners England. The home side booked their spot in the semi-finals after executing a five-wicket victory over the West Indies.
Let’s get into Wednesday’s encounter featuring the southern hemisphere sides and our prediction and top bet.
South Africa vs New Zealand
The Proteas are the in-form team, reflective in their favourites tag for this match. The Black Caps are priced at 2.375 for an upset.
South Africa is desperate to make the final and finally lift the trophy after losing to India in the final two years ago.
The Proteas’ batters are in great form. Their powerful top order has provided solid starts courtesy of Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, and Ryan Rickelton.
Skipper Markram has scored close to 270 in seven matches at an average of 53.60. South Africa’s middle order is riddled with class and has sufficient depth with a balance of aggression and stability. David Miller has been outstanding and could play a decisive role yet again.
On the bowling front, Markram has opted to start with spin, and it has paid dividends. However, it’s the pace bowlers who have dominated. Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, and Marco Jansen offer variety — pace, bounce, and awkward angles. The trio has picked up 34 wickets thus far. Throw in Kagiso Rabada , who has serious pace, and the spin option of Keshav Maharaj if conditions turn slower.
It’s hard to find a weak point in the South African team; they’ve been on point in the field, too. Tristan Stubbs has been exceptional on the boundary.
New Zealand might be underdogs heading into this encounter, but the Black Caps have a reputation for thriving under knockout pressure.
Finn Allen has shown he can be aggressive at the crease and can pile on runs in quick succession. He’ll look for support from the top order if they’re going to unsettle the bowlers.
The Black Caps are missing pace bowler Matt Henry, who returned home on paternity leave. Reuters reports that either Jacob Duffy or Kyle Jamieson will be called up as a replacement.
Spinners Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi will be key in this encounter to stem the runs and pick up key wickets.
The South Africans beat New Zealand in Ahmedabad, but the semi-final takes place at Eden Gardens. The venue offers batting-friendly conditions early on, with some assistance for spinners as the innings progress.
It promises to be an exciting match-up with both teams looking to win the big prize.
Prediction: South Africa win by 2–4 wickets or 20–30 runs.
Suggested Bet: Ngidi to take five wickets.
